Congratulations to Bill Burbage from Orlando, Florida and Daniel Schmidt from Wooster, Ohio; DGA's 2010 Am Worlds Disc Golf Tournament Fundraiser winners!
2010 – Bill Burbage – Orlando, FL.
Only one other time had this happened. Upon calling out the name of the first of two winners at the 2010 Am Worlds in Marion, Ohio, the first winning recipient couldn't have been closer to the announcement. When Bill's name was called, a gentleman standing 10 feet away raised both arms as if he was calling a touchdown followed by a loud bellowing yell.

Having the winner in house during the announcement makes the entire event that much more rewarding. Watching the reaction, the disbelief, the acceptance is something that one can't get tired of seeing. Everyone in the room could feel his excitement. The first year we had the course drawing in Milwaukee, we had a very similar situation. Though we tell entrants that you need not be present to win... it's always better when they are.
Bill is still actively looking for a location to plant his course. Being from the Orlando, FL area, he and his club have been having ongoing conversations with the local park authorities to find a suitable location. The ultimate goal would be to have the selected park department match the baskets so that there would be a full 18 hole Scarlet Red Mach III course.
In the meantime, Bill is enjoying having hole #1 as his backyard putting basket.Nice putting green you have there Bill. It may be hard to give up your sweet practice basket when the course eventually is installed.
2010 - Daniel Schmidt - Wooster, OH.
Good side stories seem to always come out of these course drawings. The story of Dan Schmidt being drawn and who drew his name is no exception. As in years past, it has been fun to find a young disc golfer in the audience to come up and draw the names of the winners. For 2010 in Marion, OH this was young Mikey Stonestreet. Mikey was in from Canton, OH to play in Am Worlds with his father Mike. Young Mikey was excited to help and was also a natural behind the microphone.
When the winning ticket was pulled and it was first announced that the winner was from the host state of Ohio, the crowd, dominated by locals got very excited. Daniel's name was called and there was a moment where everyone scanned the room to see if Dan was present. Shortly thereafter, the elder Mike Stonestreet walked up with a huge smile on his face. Come to find out Mike, Mikey and Dan all play together on a weekly basis at leagues. Needless to say, Dan Schmidt owes young Mikey BIG TIME.
Dan was in disbelief when he was called to tell him of the good news. In fact, he truly believed someone was pulling his leg. Once assured that he was indeed the winner, Dan couldn't have been more excited. Through the course of the conversation, Dan commented that this was the happiest day of his life… aside from the birth of his two children. Very cool.
Dan has yet to decide what to do with his course. His dream course would be on land that he has intentions of purchasing within the next few years. In the meantime, whether it is the park, league, tournaments or his basement putting area in the cold winter months, he takes one of his prize baskets just about everywhere he goes. He left this basket at his summer camp last summer after winning it. It served as a great way to introduce the sport to many kids that had no clue what disc golf was. "If you build it, they will come," says Dan.
One more quick note. The hole #1 basket that Dan takes with him everywhere was the basket that was on hand at Am Worlds the night of the drawing. That basket was hand delivered to him by none other that Mike and Mikey Stonestreet. Not bad, having the person who drew your winning ticket be the one to deliver your first basket. Amazing.
2010 Disc Golf World Championships was held in held in Marion, Ohio. This was the fourth year that the DGA Fundraiser and basket giveaway program had been offered.
