2009 – Shawn Johnson – Fort Mead, MD.

Shawn JohnsonShawn was speechless when he received the call that he'd won. So much so that it was believed that the call had been dropped. When he finally found his words it was apparent just how happy he was.

Within 24 hours of the call, Joel Provencher and Brian Cooke, co-owners of Disc Outfitters out of Maryland, contacted us. They had been the ones who sold Shawn the winning disc. You would have thought that they had just won the beautiful 9 hole custom Granny Smith Green course themselves.

Soon afterwards, Disc Outfitters and the local DG clubs were pooling together the needed funds to purchase an additional 9 Green Mach III's. Plans were indeed coming together fast and they needed to. They were only a couple months away from hosting their first A Tier event, the Patapsco Picnic. Disc Outfitters had been working hard to secure the A Tier event and getting the course at Patapsco State Park in tip top shape for the event.

It had been a dream of the Patapsco course stewards for some time to have two baskets per hole. The thought was to have a normal basket position and a SUPER long basket position installed and playable at all times. Generally speaking, clubs and park entities are not rich enough to create such a luxury on a course. This all changed when Shawn's ticket was drawn that night in Kansas City.Putting on winning basketd Patapsco

Shawn eagerly donated his baskets. The club raised the money for the additional nine. The new pin positions were dug and concrete poured. The baskets were installed…all in time for the 2009 Patapsco Picnic that September. The Green Mach III's were all installed in the super long hole positions. This new version of the Patapsco course is affectionately called "The Green Monster".

2009 – Dwayne Rinaldo – Auburn, CA.

2009 winner Dwayne Rinaldo

It was amazing how difficult it was to get in touch with Dwayne to let him know he'd won. Calls went to no voicemail. Emails went unanswered. It took the better part of a week to contact him. Once contact was made, Dwayne was beside himself.

When asked what he'd hope to do with the baskets, there was little hesitation. Being formerly from Lakeport, CA, Dwayne wanted to donate the baskets to Highland Springs DGC for an 18 hole expansion that was being proposed at the time.

Being that "Steady" Ed Headrick had previously lived and operated DGA out of Lakeport and having developed the original course design at Highland Springs, it was only fitting that one of the two 9 hole courses given away, find it's way to the area. We are sure Ed was smiling from above.Winning baskets in use. Lakeport,Ca

The plan was to have Dwayne donate the first 9 custom Granny Smith Green baskets and the disc golf club would purchase the remaining 9 to complete the expansion. Unfortunately, the local park authority turned down the planned expansion before the entire course was installed. The first nine custom Mach III's reside in Lakeport to this day. One June weekend a year they are used at Highland Springs, when the course and club host the "Steady" Ed Birthday Memorial Tournament. Our understanding is that during the rest of the year, the baskets are on a private course in the Lakeport area, on a hill area overlooking the valley that "Steady" Ed once called home.
