It’s with great excitement and privilege that we announce Charlie Mead of Birmingham, UK as the recipient of the “Steady” Ed Memorial Trophy for 2013. Charlie was presented with the award this past weekend during the awards ceremony of the Pro “Steady” Ed Memorial Master’s Cup at De Laveaga Disc Golf Course in Santa Cruz, CA. Charlie is the first International recipient of the award.

The Trophy is given out each year at the Master’s Cup to a participant of the event that has, as Ed would say, “left the sport of disc golf better than they found it.” This disc golf ambassador award is regularly considered a lifetime achievement award. Charlie is the 10th recipient of the Trophy.
Mr. Mead’s resume of accomplishments in not only disc golf, but also all things flying disc is quite impressive. In Charlie’s 34 years playing disc sports he has been a player, organizer, and all around enabler, ensuring the growth of the disc sports throughout Europe. Below is just a partial list of his accomplishments.

  • Co-founder and President of the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), the European Flying Disc Federation (EFDF), and the United Kingdom Flying Disc Federation (UKFDA).
  • Tournament Director for 9 World and European Championships
  • Established and designed the first permanent disc golf course in 1980 at Essex University. The course is still in use today.
  • Held World, European and British titles in disc golf.

It is safe to say that without Charlie’s motivation and influence, the sport of disc golf in the UK and throughout Europe would be years behind its current state. Charlie brings a spirit and love to the flying disc that burns eternal. It is easy to see why he has been so influential in the growth of disc sports.

To have won this award is the greatest moment of my Disc Golf life”, says Charlie. “Thank you to everyone who has been part of the last 34 years and added to the quality of life and sport I have lived! As Ambassador for the DGA and for Ed’s legacy for the next year I will hope to live up to those who have won this award before – and what a roster it is! I feel privileged as the first International player to have been awarded the Memorial Trophy and will carry the eternal message of friendship and spirit to the competitive fields of Europe and the USA in the coming year in an invigorated way – life in the old boy yet!

Indeed there is Charlie.
Congratulations, this is well deserved!
