No wimps, no whiners
It was three below zero last year when people who normally are in cargo shots and tank tops, glistening with sweat, were uncoiling to toss a disc into a basket. It's called disc golf.
"These guys are just doing it to get out of the house anyway," said Shane Stewart, tournament director of the Des Moines Ice Bowl.
For nearly a generation, the Ice Bowl has not wimped out. This year's whine-free event occurs at Grandview Park in Des Moines Sunday.
It captures the spirit of why some recreate as if it's summer. Because they are tough enough.
"Why not? It shows we are out there far enough to pull this off," said Bob Howie of the Des Moines Disc Golf Club, which puts on the event. "Sometimes you lose discs in the snow or the wind is 20 miles per hour."
Wearing a snow suit like a tick waiting to pop one forces a change in one's wind-up.
"We're in Iowa; get used to it," Howie said.
