STORM LAKE, Iowa -- In the spirit of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em," folks in Storm Lake offer up a cure for the winter blahs: Extreme Weather Days.
In what organizers hope will become an annual observance, events and entertainment are planned Friday and Saturday along Sunrise Park Road (between the Sunrise Pointe Club House and the Lakeside Marina) and at King's Pointe Resort.
Events are free except for Saturday's all-day ice-fishing tournament; call 712-732-5440 or visitcitizensfnb.com for details.
Highlights include fishing and disc golf practice opportunities Friday. On Saturday, kids activities are planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sunrise Pointe Clubhouse. A disc golf tourney and cross-country skiing are at the same time. A Snowmobile Poker Run is planned as well.
Also Saturday: Snowman/snow sculpture contest, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., hot chocolate bar at King's Pointe, 1-6 p.m., homemade sled contest and extreme bike ride, 1 p.m.
And the ultimate test of hardiness: the Brrr It's Cold Out Here Challenge at 11 a.m. outside Sunrise Pointe Club House. Those 18 and older are invited to see who can sit longest on a block of ice in shorts, T-shirt and flip-flops. The 2:30 p.m. awards ceremony, with cash prizes, will be indoors.
