Disc golf tournament to help March of Dimes Brazosport Facts LAKE JACKSON —
The Lake Jackson Disc Golf League and Birdshot Disc Golf Tournaments will join forces Saturday to host a fundraiser tournament for the March of Dimes.
Registration will be from 7:45 to 9 a.m. at Dunbar Park behind Brazos Mall on CR 2004 with a players meeting at 9:15 a.m.
There will be two rounds of disc golf, the first beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the other after the last cards have been turned in.
“Right now, there are five members in our Lake Jackson club but we are always looking for more members,” event organizer Ben Madary said. “We’ve had about five tournaments prior to this one and have attracted up to 50 people at one tournament, so we are anticipating maybe between 60 to 70 players so the cause can be a good one.”
Entry fees differ in experience levels — $5 for beginners, $10 for intermediate and $15 for advanced — with the top three places paying out. There also will be a closest to the pin, longest putt and drive contests. Lunch will be available at an additional cost.
Registrations can be e-mailed to ben.madary(at)hotmail.com.
“So far, everybody that has played disc golf has gotten hooked, and it is real easy for beginners to pick up,” Madary said. “I think the hardest part about this game is the accuracy, and the easiest is the driving.
“We’ve had people come down from Houston and the course has been pretty much certified by everyone because the holes are put well together.”
One of the players joining in on Saturday is Bobby Condon. The event was organized because of his wife, Amy Condon.
“The primary purpose is for the March of Dimes awareness walk that will be held in March or April,” Bobby Condon said. “My wife is putting together that March of Dimes event, and it will be the first one ever in Brazoria County. She was a preemie and went through all of the struggles, so because of that she’s decided to put that event on.”
A player doesn’t need much equipment to play disc golf — all he or she needs is a disc, which can be found at area sports stores.
“This is a pretty laid-back sport. And the good thing about it is that it’s free to play,” Bobby Condon said. “It isn’t overly competitive or physically demanding, and it is a sport the whole family can do and most can keep up with.”
