About Disc Golf
“Disc golf has proven to be THE BEST THING WE HAVE EVER DONE...PERIOD.”
Bradford Carr,
Director of Student Activities. Graceland University, Lamoni, IA.
Why isn't Disc Golf called Frisbee Golf?
"Frisbee®" is a registered trademark like "Kleenex®". When Ed Headrick was formalizing the sport he ran into trademark complications so he coined and trademarked the term “Disc Golf”. Once the name "Disc Golf" caught on, Headrick released the trademark to the public domain.
What is a golf disc?
A disc is like a Frisbee, in that it flies, but that's where the similarities end.
A Frisbee is large, floats slowly, doesn't fly far and is designed to play catch.
A "Disc" for disc golf is aerodynamic, hard to catch, and varies widely in size, stiffness and flight characteristics. Disc golf discs can be thrown over 800 feet.
A disc in disc golf is like clubs in ball golf. There are drivers, mid-ranges and putters. There are discs for the wind, discs that curve to the right or left or hit the ground and roll.
“Disc Golf Association is dedicated to welcoming new generations of young and old into our sport, our parks, and our lives, with confidence and open arms. Disc Golf is our life. Disc Golf is an amazingly simple game that makes no demands, has no limitations, and provides a mechanism that has changed many lives positively.
You will never be sorry if you install a Disc Golf course in your facility. You will be honored by the players and take great comfort in the fact that Disc Golf will change your park and perhaps you will be as fortunate as us and Disc Golf will change your life.”

A disc golf course provides "bang for the buck". Dozens of players can play a course the same time.
Construction of a disc golf course is inexpensive, the maintenance costs are minimal.
A disc golf course can make use of land unsuitable for other sports, activities or development.
Disc golf is played much like traditional ball golf. Some of the rules of disc golf are even the same. Disc golf courses are typically 9, 18, 27, or 36 holes long and almost all courses are free.
Disc golf is one of the fastest growing and best lifetime fitness sports. The game is easy to learn, a healthy outdoor activity and accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.
Since playing disc golf is generally free, people from every economic status can enjoy this outdoor sport; no green fees, no caddies, no clubs, no tipping.
A small basic disc golf course can be built on as little as two acres of land, a small nine-hole disc golf course can be established on as little as five acres of land. A full championship course often is built on one to two acres per hole. These championship-caliber courses can be found on 40 acres or more utilizing land unsuitable for other sports, activities or development.
Disc golf is found in resorts, state and county parks and on private property. A disc golf course brings the local community out to the parks and attracts other disc golfers from surrounding areas. Dedicated disc golf players and disc golf clubs benefit the park system by taking up active roles in course upkeep and maintenance.
Disc golf can also be found in schools where it has increasingly been added to curriculums. Schools have found that kids not only love the sport, but that disc golf helps develop critical thinking skills and provides a safe means of exercise, outdoor education and other life lessons like planning and social skills.
