Each DGA permanent style Mach Family Disc Pole Hole disc golf basket is hand inspect for quality and has a 20 Year Limited Warranty.
What are baskets? » DGA invented the first Disc Pole Hole over 35 years ago when DGA formalized the sport. “Basket”, is one of the most common informal names for a Disc Pole Hole, but a Disc Pole Hole is also know by other terms such as, pin, hole, target, disc catcher, goal, chains, bucket and pole.
The Disc Pole Hole is made up of a chain holder attached at the top of a pole that is often cemented directly into the ground. The chain holder has chains attached to it that surround the pole and hang down towards a basket which is attached to the pole below the chain. Normally a disc golf course is made up of 9 to 18 targets. Disc golf targets have to conform to specific dimensions if they are to be used in PDGA sanctioned tournament play.
Baskets are the main and most important components of a disc golf course. The target serves the same function as a hole would in the game of ball golf. When a thrown disc hits the chains and drops into the basket, the hole is complete. A player's score is added up by counting the number of throws it took for the disc to come to rest in the basket. Baskets are most often found out on the disc golf course but lots of people have targets in their back yards for fun and practice and schools and camps use portable baskets for recreation and PE.
What are the different types of baskets? » DGA manufactures 6 basket models that, with the exception of the Mach Mini, are designed around conforming to the PDGA specification for tournament play.
There are two categories of DGA baskets, permanent and practice. Permanent basket are heavy duty and are designed to be installed in an outdoor park and recreation setting where they will get constant disc golf play, (banging of the chains). These baskets have 18 to 24 strands of chain and have to withstand sun, wind, rain and snow. The permanent baskets are hot dipped galvanized head to toe and can be powder coated different colors. Each permanent DGA Disc Pole Hole can be configured to be 1) free standing on a portable base, 2) cemented directly into the ground or, 3) connected to an anchor cemented into the ground which allows a permanent and removable installation.
DGA practice baskets are lighter weight and lighter duty then DGA permanent baskets and designed to be easily portable. These baskets have 14 to 16 strands of chain to save weight and increase portability. DGA practice baskets are not designed to be left outdoors but to be put indoors when not in use. The Mach Lite can fold in on itself like an umbrella and comes with a shoulder bag. The M-14 is an all metal basket that snaps together with three spring loaded buttons. When not in use the M-14 can be kept in it's shipping box for storage.
Basket history » Most people know what a disc golf basket is when they see one in the park. While the Disc Pole Hole is now the standard for the sport of disc golf, in 1975 when DGA first unveiled the Disc Pole Hole to the Frisbee community, it was a revolutionary breakthrough.
When Ed Headrick started the DGA with his son Ken to work on the first Disc Pole Hole catching device, people were throwing Frisbees at light poles, trash cans, signs and trees. DGA's first Disc Pole Hole consisted of 10 chains hanging in a parabolic shape over an upward opening basket, (US Patent 4,039,189, issued 1975). Ed had tried numerous prototypes before cracking the idea of hanging chains over a basket. The archives of the DGA are full of pictures of fishing net contraptions, welded boxes of rings on poles and other sketches hatched out of Headrick's imagination.
Since DGA's founding there have been many attempts to improve upon the Disc Pole Hole's basic design. However, just as the basic design of the bicycle has lasted the test of time, the basic design of the first Disc Pole Hole from 1975 is still the foundation of every basket today.
Over the years DGA has come out with numerous inventions and patents improving upon the original design. These include various chain configurations including multiple rows of chain (inner chains), sliding attaching point for the chain(sliding links), the Trapper Basket, and most recently the V reflex chain configuration of the Mach Lite.
