Me and the boys constantly ask ourselves, can you really rip on a Disc Golf Course. People are at different levels and what is good for one goose might really suck for another goose. What ever that means.
Maybe this is why we are so dedicated to share our visits to the Disc Golf Courses we visit.
Harrington Park in Nevada Iowa is a fine example of this dilema. Maybe you are sick and tired of playing courses where the woods and water eat your discs on a regular basis. Maybe you think it might be nice to make a throw and say to yourself "I know exactly where my disc is." Or maybe your Aunt Myrtle is having one of those 90th birthday parties and you get to teach all of the kiddies how to play a great sport without worrying about your losing your 2nd favorite disc. Really who is going to sacrifice their favorite disc to an amatuer.
Nevada Iowa. This is one of those towns where they purposley change the pronounciation of the town so they can always know who the interlopers are.
Las Vegas Nevada and Nevada Iowa. You say Po-tato, Dan Quale says Po-tatoe.
Las Vagas Na-Vaa-Da, Na-VEH-da Iowa. Get it? Logic does not apply, just remember Southern Minnesotans call people from Iowa "I-wegions" and it fits believe me.
Directions: US 30 to 19th St. exit, north on 19th 0.5 miles to "T". Go left on Lincoln Way, immediate right into parking lot.
Dead on directions. The only thing to remember is US 30 parralels Ne-VEH-da and the 19th St. Exit is the last exit if you are coming from the west or the first exit if you are coming from the east.
Description: In city park/arboretum. Flat terrain with wide variety of tree and shrub species. Continuously being planted with new plant varieties. Long tees play 3,5,1.
Another vague description of a Disc Golf Park. One thing is nice to know is that many Iowa Parks plant Box Elders, Cotton Woods and Russian Olive trees. Many people would think this is a list of garbage trees which for the most part is true. However for a Disc Golf Course these three trees are fast growers and create creative problems for the Golfer who wants to be challenged.
Harrington Park doesn't have any Cotton woods because it's not swampy enough but I think I made my point. Five year growth on a Box Elder or Cotton Wood can be signifigant. Not quite Jack and the Beanstalk but close.
Virtually all of the holes can be described as the following; A straight hole with trees either in the middle of the fairway or lined along the side or both. Staying low with your throws is a good idea. The placement of the trees appear to have been thought out. You may lose a disc in the corn but it would have to be one horrible shot. Wind is always a factor on this course. A constant reminder of the wind is the two large Wind Turbines located in town and always viewable from Harrington Park.
The tee boxes are grass and they have some decent markers at the start of each hole.
The first hole is to the right or east of the parking lot. Tee Box 1. is sort of hidden by the corn but makes sence once you find it.
I can't give this course a super rating but I would recommend it for stretching your legs and teaching a new person the FANTASTIC SPORT of Disc Golf.
Two and a Half Discs Out of Five.
Oh, check out George Battles BBQ while you are in Nevada Iowa. It's not the best BBQ ever but not bad. It sure beats Dairy Queen for lunch. This is the usual option in Iowa.
