Disc Golf in America - Wausau, WI - Memorial Park - Marathon County Print E-mail
Lovely Wausau Wisconsin.  The town with USA in it's name and an asian population that rivals St. Paul MN.

One thing I don't get is the fierce love the people have for the Wausau area.  It used to really smell bad when the logging was better. The town is a huge maze and it's not really Wausau it's, Wausau/Rib Mountain/Rothschild/Schoefield.

One redeaming quality is the Point Brewery in Steven's Point about thirty miles away considering which Wausau your in.  If you are in the Wausau/Rothschild which is just down the street from Schoefield.

WHAT EVER YOU DO. DO NOT get mixed up and think you are looking for Marathon Park in Marathon County.  I did and it was a tad creepy.  There is a mock settler school located in Marathon Park and when Pablo and I drove by children were throwing hoops with ribbons attached at each other.  The object was to catch a hoop with a stick in your hand.  It may be a real school but who knows.

We drove all over the winding streets of Wausau in search of the REAL Memorial Park in Marathon County.

PDGA ONLINE DISC GOLF COURSE DIRECTORY:

Directions: From I-39, take Hwy 29 east, exit at the Rothschild/Business 51 exit, head north, continue north on Grand Ave, head west on Sturgeon Eddy Rd. to the park entrance a few blocks on the right.

The thing to remember about getting to Memorial Park is you have two major factors to consider.  All towns built on/near rivers are confusing and ones built by Polish immigrants....well...your life is in your own hands.

I would suggest if you are coming from the SOUTH to try the following directions:

Take Interstate 39 to Wausau.
Take exit 187onto Wisconsin 29 East heading toward Greenbay/Weston.
Take Exit 171 Schoefild/Rothschild Exit.
Turn RIGHT onto US-51 / BR -N (go 1.2 miles)
Turn LEFT ON Schoefiled Ave. for .01 mile
BEAR RIGHT onto US-51-BR for 2.4 miles
Turn Left onto Sturgeon Eddy Road for .03 miles
Bear right and down Memorial Park Road.

Or remember North of Airport and East of the Wisconsin River.

Description: Small and flat with water in play on 4 holes. Ball field, tennis/basketball courts, pool, playground, boat landing and picnic areas.

If you don't like the description then go to: http://www.co.marathon.wi.us/is/pks/pdf/memorial_park_disc_golf.pdf

The link is a score card and course map.  If the good people of Wausau can't give you a direct route to the course they're going to give you a nice map and score card you can print out.  I wish I had it when I went there.  Pablo is still pissed about it.

After going to the wrong park and drinving all over Wausau and it's burrows we finally made it to Memorial Park in Marathon County.

Earl (my trusty disc bag) and I got out of Pablo and surveyed the course.  Make sure you park in the very first parking lot to the left.

The course is 9 holes, flat and god forbid you ever have to play when there are people in the park.  We played the Friday before the Wisconsin fishing opener.  Talk about the calm before the storm.

If your family ever decided to have a family reunion in this park and your fat Aunt Sophie says, "Johnny why don't you take the kids Frisbee Golfing."  This is the kind of course where it would suck to be the only disc player in your family.

Four out of nine holes have water implications.  How painful would it be to see an $18 disc go into the water to only have some snot nosed relative look at you and say, "sorry."  It's not like the kid is Tanner from the Bad News Bears where you just shove him head first into a garbage can.

If you are reading this and you are the person who lost a beautilful Red Champion Eagle in the water on hole seven with no name on it.  He traveled with me for a while.  Then he ended up in the cesspool in Sunnyside Park - New Hope MN to continue his journey.  I never wrote my name on him either.  On the upside, now you know where he is now.

Between the map on the web site listed above and the somewhat accurate description I will leave it up to you to play Memorial Park in Marathon County.

I give this course a two out of five discs because it has water and if you were from there it's all you got.

Johnny Rocket
