Disc Golf in America - New Hope, MN - Sunnyside Park |
|
|
The bottom line is, this course is worth skipping. If you want more information then be my guest and read on partner.
Me and my four-some, Pablo my ride, Earl my disc bag and Uncle Buck my faithful lid showed up at Sunnyside Park (nine hole course) on a sunny day. Pablo stayed back as we played.
The directions posted on Google Disc Golf Course maps sucks the big Kahoona.
Directions: From Winnetka Ave., go east on 47th a few blocks until you are forced to turn, go left to parking area on the right.
Scrap the directions go to Yahoo maps and punch in 7701 471/2 ave. North, New Hope, MN and you will be sent to the parking lot for nine holes of the finest Disc Golf New Hope has to offer.
Or as the description reads; Small nicely groomed park alongside an industrial area. Dual tees on most holes. Some moderate elevation with a few OB challenges (street and water). Long tees play 8,0,1.
Let's get cracking and let you decide if you want to make the trip.
First of all the course is surprisingly busy, people over 5 feet tall are friendly (I'll explain in a minute) and helpful to guide you through the course.
The first tee box is very close to the 8 car parking lot located through a couple of tall pines. All the tee boxes are cement and have wooden markers. Located to the southwest of the 1st tee box is a pracitce basket which is nice for working on your short game.
I would like to pause a moment and get something off of my chest. Disc Golf is a growing sport and for some reason many of the players don't respect the parks they play in. Please be warned that if Pablo spots you doing the following I would suggest having your hightops laced up tight.
1. Garbage. Parks have been shut down because of losers who can't carry out the beer bottle they bring in.
2. Some courses have put up nice signs only to have losers write their aces on them. The next time you get an ACE , we suggest pulling that sharpie out of your bag, sign your disc then shove the sharpie up you back side. Discer's don't carry combs in their pockets and discer's should NOT carry sharpies.
Okay back to Sunnyside Park.
The course does allow you to work on your game. Every hole makes you do something different.
Hole one (blind shot) gives you the opportunity to loosen up your arm, get an ace, pull that sharpie out of your backside and sign your disc. There really isn't any way to make a bad shot, so just let it go. It is a blind shot straight from the tee box and just over a hill.
Hole two (Long hole) is a short walk through the woods. Just follow the path and you'll be fine. This hole is a long shot will a gradual rise in elevation. Just aim to the left of the big Elm.
Hole three (Accuracy) makes you throw through a tunnel of trees. There are no tree limbs to hit but you have to make a MANDO throw out of the Tee box. This hole gives you a great opportunity to split a disc. Hole three is short and supposed to be fun and challenging. I found it annoying.
Hole four (Straight but not too long) This is a fun hole because there is the most vile pond sitting behind the basket. You have to throw fairly straight through the woods. You may consider throwing into the woods is better than trying to get your disc out of the cesspool. This is probably where you will meet the PA's (Punk A**) kids.
Holes 4, 5, and 6 are located next to section 8 housing. At anyone time there will be one to five kids in the cesspool fishing out discs. These kids then try to sell the discs to the players who come through. The night we were there we had the opportunity to buy over 10 discs. One discer told me he uses the kids to fish out his discs but you have to be carefull because the kids will step on your disc to mark it and come back to get it later.
Hole five (Over water) is a throw over the cesspool and not that difficult if you don't psych yourself out. Once you get over the pond it is mowed grass and a full view of the apartments the PA's come from. We had the opportunity to meet two of the kids mothers. She told me her oldest song cut his foot in the cesspool and had to go to the hospital because she couldn't treat the infection.
Hole six (accuracy) if you through to the right you hit the street and lose a stroke. If you throw it to the left you are having conversation with the PA's because you hit water.
Hole seven (Pinball) trees, trees and more trees. The grass is groomed if you don't through into the woods directly to your left. Short hole.
Hole eight (Chance to pull the sharpie out of your butt) This hole is a little confusing to find. Leave basket seven and pretend you are walking back to your vehicle. go up the hill, stay on the left side and you will run into the tee box. You can pretty much let it all out on this throw, there isn't a lot to hit.
Hole nine (Long throw up an incline) is a short walk around the woods were you will be able to see people throwing from the 1st tee box. If you are from Minnesota you should throw up onto the area where the hockey rink is in the winter. If you are from places where they don't have outdoor hockey rinks you should throw up onto the flat area with your first throw. If you stay right you will have to throw from an incline. you should need a long second throw to get par which is easier from a flat area. The basket is on the side of the grassy hill.
There you go. Sunny Side, 9 holes of fun.
I give this a one out of five discs. It's better than nothing and the course does allow you to work on your game.
Side Note: For some reason Pablo was playing a top forty disco station while we were driving away. On the radio was an advertisment for the American Idol tour coming to Minneapolis. The Dawg Randy Jackson did the voice over and said the tour was sponsored by Pop Tarts. This made me laugh and quickly reminded me I shouldn't drink red bull when listening to top 40. Red Bull burns when you shoot it out your nose. After cleaning up the mess with my shirt I wondered, if Pop Tarts sponsors American Idol, who would the sponsor for Sunnyside Park be? Who cares, on to the next course.
