Events, Updates, and News
Monday,
November 17th
Alan
Brown asked me to post the following:
This coming
saturday november 22nd at 9:30 am ,you are invited
to Santa Cruz River Park for a day of discgolf. I
am moving to Iowa at the end of the month and would
like to throw a discgolf party before I go. Free Beer,
burgers and dogs on the grill and alot of discgolf.
We were thinking about having a round of large format
best shot .Then some food and a second round TBD.
So show up and wish me well, or tell me to "GET
THE HELL OUT OF TOWN ALAN BROWN". I also will
have a ton of gear to sell to help with my move. I
have enjoyed my time here in Tucson and apprciate
TCL and all its members for the continued efforts
to improve discgolf in Tucson. I also have pledged
to buy 1.5 new baskets for Santa Cruz that I will
probably never get to use. Peace.......Alan P.S.ask
not what discgolf can do for you, ask what can you
do for discgolf J.A.

Ben
has announced the 2008 Discraft
One Disc Ace Race! The event will be held at Groves
on October 19th. Every player will receive 2 brand
new prototype discs, a Discraft cap, and a mini. That
is a $55.00 value for the meager amount of $25.00.
This event is limited to 20 players with no pre-registration.
The grand prize is a 10 premium plastic golf discs
and a brand new disc golf bag! Be sure to arrive early
so you don't miss out. See the tournament schedule
for more details!
One
of the major topics we covered at the last meeting
was the state of the broken down baskets at Santa
Cruz River Park. While the City has been making improvements
to the park, the reality is that if we want new baskets
at Santa Cruz, then we disc golfers will have to do
it on our own. To this end, TCL is announcing the
Santa Cruz Restoration Project. Our
goal is to raise the funds to purchase 18
brand new DGC Mach 3 baskets! Santa Cruz
is one of the countries oldest permanent disc golf
courses. Further, Santa Cruz is southern Arizona's
busiest and most popular course. Please help make
this project a reality! Read
more here
Marana
Saturday morning league is now up and running again
with a new start time of 8:00am. See the
league schedule for more details!
Groves
Sunday afternoon league has changed times. It will
now begin at 4:00pm. See the
league schedule for more details!
Beginning
Nov. 1st, the Santa Cruz 'A' league will be moving
forward an hour to 9:00am. See the
league schedule for more details!
Also
beginning on Nov. 1st, the Groves 'B' league will
be moving from Thursday afternoon to Saturday Mornings
at 9:00am.
Due
to a confused webmaster, the Turkey Shoot was incorrectly
posted being on Nov. 22nd. The correct date is Nov.
29th! Be sure to update your calendar! See the tournament
schedule for more details.
Chris
Kaufmann is running the Southern Arizona Disc
Golf Classic! We'll be playing four rounds
over two days on three different courses. We'll be
playing Marana Rock, Santa Cruz, and Groves, all in
the standard layout with the standard park rules.
See the tournament schedule
for more details!

Big
news since the last update! I think I have told many
of you already, but for those I haven't run into lately,
My wife and I are expecting a new baby Chino.
We got the results of the tests, so we know its going
to be a girl! She is due on Feb. 11th. And yes, I
am so happy I could that I can't stand it. Needless
to say, I have been very focused on Home and Career
lately, so I apologize that I haven't been as regular
on my web updates. I will try to keep things a bit
more current, but please be patient with me over the
next few months.
The
September
monthly has been planned for Sunday Sept.28th
at 9:00 am! We are going to be playing 50-cent
skins on an alternate version of the Groves
course that you guys will love. The club is
not collecting any cash for registration on this event,
so the most a round can cost you is $9.00. Svea will
be set up with the Barbeque so we will have hotdog
and hamburger lunches for sale that will include chips
and dessert. Also, I will have the club cooler out
there with beer and sodas. This is the only fundraising
that the club will be doing, so bring an appetite
and a thirst. We may even have a freshly stocked club
store. We'll play a first round, break for lunch,
and then play an optional second round. For all the
info, check
out the flyer!
Also,
Ben has begun planning the 2008 Tucson Ace
Race! It will be Oct. 18th at Groves.
Ben will be shortening up the course so there will
be lots of tasty ace runs for you all to go for. Players
meeting is at 9:30, tee-off at 10:00, short break
for lunch, the a second round. All of this is still
tentative, so check back and i'll post more current
info as I get it.
Mike
A. has been posting frequent updates regarding the
Marana course at the TCL
Forums. Especially important are the notices
he has been posting regarding course development.
It's important to remember that this is still an ongoing
project. The Marana crew have been making the best
of the flooded course by spending time pouring pads!
But they need volunteers to turn out and help!
This is going to be southern Arizona's finest course
when the work is done, so please check
the messages often and show up to help out! Chad
is still doing some golf out at Marana with temp baskets,
and all that info can be found on the message
board as well.
I
talked with Svea recently, and she is going be starting
up that Ladies
League again. It starts at 5:00pm Mondays at Santa
Cruz. Please help spread the word!
And
speaking of leagues, the Groves
'A' league will be moving to 4:00pm beginning
October 5th. Again, help remind each other and tell
those who may not be wired to the Interwebs!
The
next open meeting is October 1st.
We will be playing $5.00 random draw doubles
before the meeting at Santa Cruz. We'll tee-off
at 4:30, then meet back up at Rusty's at 7:00. I highly
recommend making it to this meeting as there is likely
to be an important announcement that affects us all!
The format is sort of town hall, so if you have any
ideas or comments to bring, this is a great place
to do it. Also, Rusty's has great burgers and beer!
Good
news for all disc golfers! Tee-pads are going to begin
being poured this Saturday at Marana Rock DGC! Here's
the info from Mike A.:
<begin
message>We are going to pour 2 tee pads (possibly
3) this Saturday at Marana Rock. Parks and Rec will
set the forms and steel Friday. We will be utilizing
a tote trailer to haul pre-mixed concrete to the site,
so the entire effort shouldn't be very back-breaking.
I've got a couple of volunteers (myself included),
and the Town might have a couple of guys helping also,
but could use a couple more. PLEASE CALL ME and let
me know if you can help out. I need to know how many
people can make it, so PLEASE call. Thanks!! 975-2317<end
message>
Guys,
we need all the help with this we can get. The bottom
line is Marana has the potential to be Southern AZ's
#1 course, but that is dependant on our turning out
and helping build it! If you can make it out, please
do so!

seeing registrations coming in from all over the US.
Be sure to send yours in soon! You can book your rooms
at the hotel online by visiting
this link! Book your room soon; the cutoff date

Mike
A. has sent me an updated map
for the Marana Rock course which includes GPS
distances for all holes! Nice work, Mike. The guys
out at Marana are really stepping up and showing pride
in thier local course.
Also:
if you are heading to Santa Cruz, be sure to take
Speedway as Grant is closed at the freeway while they
tear down the overpass!
Finally,
Groves park suffered some serious weather related
damage last Sunday. Damage included downed
powerlines, the fence along fairway 17 was blown over,
roofs from houses blown off, tree damage and more.
I'll post more as soon as the info is relayed to me.
For more info, check this
topic at the message boards. Mickey B. has been
posting updates regularly. If you know something new,
please post there or email
me directly.

as they happen! Also, sponsorship
info is available online!
Also,
for everyone who runs a league, I
have posted a
link to some of the basic stuff we all seem to
need (payout structure, scorecards). I'll post more
stuff to this later. From now on, you'll be able to
access these documents via the League
Schedule

Just
wanted to say thanks to all 14 people who braved the
heat and turned out for the Summer Solstice Skins.
It was probably the most fun I have had playing disc
golf in several months. In spite of the heat, everyone
had a great attitude, the event ran really smooth,
and I couldn't be happier! Believe it or not, five
of us even had energy for a second round of nine holes
at high noon. If you guys would like to see more skins
format events in the future,
drop me an email and let me know! Special thanks
to Svea for braving the heat to help out and barbeque
us a wonderful lunch, to Mike Anderson for all his
work improving the Marana
Rock course, to Ben for always
being there to help out, and to Pen Selusi for winning
all my money in spite of my excellent round (I'll
get you next time, dude!). Once again, I really appreciate
everyone turning out and making this event such a
delight to run. I hope you all had at least half as
much fun as I did.
Speaking
of Marana
Rock, Chad asked me to announce that beginning
Saturday, June 28th, the Marana
Rock league will be starting at 7:00 am. I think
everyone who played today would agree that this is
a good call! Be sure to show up, Chad runs a really
fun league and Marana
Rock is a sweet course!
Also,
the Sunday Morning Santa Cruz
league is moving back an hour and will
now begins at 8:00am. Be sure to arrive on
time! I should also mention that Santa Cruz is now
mostly in the short position, so traditionally this
is the time to have some aces hit! Please
help spread the word!
News:
Congrats
to Svea for her 1st place win at this year's Treebash!
Not only was this Svea's first win, she did it at
a PDGA A tier event played on some of the toughest
courses in Arizona! WAY TO GO SVEA!
The
Lemmon
Drop results have been posted to the PDGA web
site. A Big 'thanks' to Jack Adams
for running this event again! Jack not only doubled
the amount of people who played this year, but he
also managed to make it a smooth running event that
was really great fun with nice payouts. If you guys
get a moment, please email Jack and tell him how much
you appreciate his hard work. This event is exceptionally
phys2cally difficult and time consuming to set up,
tear down and organize! TCL would also like to extend
a huge 'Thank You' to all the volunteers
who helped with baskets, spotted, dug pads, and took
care of many other mundane tasks that made this event
possible. Also, kudos to Alan 'Upshot' Brown
for setting up and running the mini golf. Alan took
it on himself to organize and run this event on his
own, and he did a heck of a job! it really made for
a fun diversion while we nursed those kegs!
Speaking
of the Lemmon Drop, Jack will need volunteers
one last time on June 7th to help retrieve the remianing
baskets. If you can possibly help, meet the guys up
by the ski area at 10:00am.
Probably
the coolest news for this update
was the Marana Rock article and Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony! The press was very positive towards
local disc golf and TCL. To view the article from
the AZ Daily Star, check
here. You know, this would be a great opportunity
to help promote the sport and club even more! Write
a letter to the editor and tell them how
much you would love to see coverage of our local tournaments
on the sports page. Also, take a minute and post
a positive comment
in the 'replies' section of the online article
(you may need to sign up for a free account to post).
The more good press we get, the more opportunities
we will have to work with officials in Southern Az
to continue to grow our sport! TCL would also like
to give a huge shout-out to the Marana officials who
have shown so much enthusiasm and support in helping
to make this project happen.
Honestly, I can't help but to be amazed at how enthusiastic
and forward thinking the Marana parks and town leaders
are. If only more cities in southern Arizona understood
how beneficial disc golf can be in maintaining and
improving open spaces and city parks, then we would
soon find ourselves with multiple world class courses
being installed. But we should all be aware that it
doesn't end here! We need to continue to lobby our
local officials. We Need to let them know that we
share a common goal: we all want beautiful, natural,
and ecologically sound areas to enjoy. But unlike
most other sports clubs and enthusiasts, disc
golfers are willing to put in the time and work necessary
to see it happen! So spread the word in Oro Valley,
Sierra Vista, Bisbee, Tucson, Catalina, Eloy, Ajo,
Gila Bend and everywhere else in southern AZ! Explain
to your local parks official and councilmen that disc
golf can improve natural areas and reduce crime in
established city parks! OK, enough of my overenthusiastic
ranting, let me wipe the foam from my chin and we'll
move on...
The
June monthly plans are now underway!
I will post a flyer and some more info as soon as
I can complete them, but here is the info that I have
so far:
Summer
Solstice Skins
Date: June 21st
Time:Players Meeting begins promptly at 8:00am
Place: Marana
Rock
Format: Skins
Cost: 50 cents per skin, cash paid within your card
only!
We
will play one round beginning at 8:00am, then we'll
have a brief break for food and beverages, then there
will be an optional second round for any who would
like to stay and play. The 50 cent skin format means
that no individual player can lose more than $9.00
in a single round. Instead of the club taking the
normal $1.00 per player, TCL will not be charging
anything for entry. Instead, Svea will be set up with
the club store and a grill where she will be selling
discs, hot-dogs, veggie brats, and cold beverages.
The plastic, food and beverage sales will
be the only club fundraising going on at this event,
so bring an appetite!Steve
Chino will be the TD for this event. We plan only
to have 2 divisions for this event: Pro and Am. However,
it would be awesome if the ams were willing to step
up and play pro (like I will be). I don't run a lot
of events, but I think this one will be big fun and
very relaxed. In fact, I am officially invoking the
Ice Bowls 'no wimps, no whiners' rule. Anyone busting
chops or bitching will be publicly humiliated :) Please
come out and try a new format and show a little support
for your humble Webmaster & Information Officer
(i.e. me) If you have never played skins before, please
read
this brief summary and then email
me with any questions. The format is simple
to learn, so please don't feel at all intimidated.
Come out and try it, I promise you'll have fun!
Vince
Fitzpatrick Memorial
Date: July 19th
Time:8:30 tee-off
Place: Santa
Cruz River Park
Format: Standard Singles Format with CASH payouts
for ALL divisions!
Cost: $15-$30 (depending on division)
Also,
just wanted to remind you all that Trevor is an amazing
TD: He had his flyer in for the Vince's
Memorial months ago and the plans are available
online here! Vince's
is going to be BIG this year. We had a ton of positive
feedback from last year, and couple that with the
fact that every Arizona event this year so far has
been completely filled, and you'll know that these
could be some FAT payouts!! Plus, all proceeds will
go to a very good cause! Can't wait to play it, Trev!
Finally,
Ben and I should have all the event enfo for this
years Tumbleweed up around the 14th. Be sure to check
back!
Alan
Brown is organizing a mini disc golf tourny up at
the Lemmon Drop. For more details and a flyer,
check the tournament
schedule.
The
University of Arizona Chi Alphas are putting on a
doubles tournment on May 10th at Santa
Cruz River Park. Check the tournament schedule
for the flyer
and more info. Please note that this is not a TCL
event, so questions should be sent to the Chi Alphas!
Monday
April 28th, 2008
Mike
Anderson asked me to post the following:
begin
message-"The Town of Marana is going to have
a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Marana Rock
DGC on Saturday, May 31, 2008. The exact
time of the ceremony will be announced when we know
for sure. The Mayor of Marana, the Director of Parks
and Recreation, as well as other representatives will
be on hand for the ceremony. Local news will be informed
of the event and should also be present. This has
been scheduled to avoid and tournament conflicts,
so we would like to get as many disc golfers as possible
to show up at the Marana course. That Saturday is
also doubles league, so plan to stay and play!
When
playing Marana Rock, PLEASE pick up your trash! I
know the course isn't in the best shape, yet, but
let's do our part to keep it clean! Trash cans will
be installed at the course in the next couple of weeks.
Until then, please don't toss your empty water bottles,
cigarette butts, bottle caps, etc. on the ground.
There are trash cans located at the small park next
to basket 9, 18. Please use them for now. Thanks!
And
thanks to Trevor, Chad, Kevin, and Kristen for their
work at the course last Sunday!! Slowly, but surely,
the course is starting to take shape!!"
-end message
And,
just an observation here, but as Mike said, picking
up our own trash is important to maintaining good
relations with the various authorities on whose goodwill
our ability to improve and add new courses depends.
In short, not just at Marana, but at ALL courses,
PLEASE PICK UP YOUR TRASH!
Also,
Ben has set up a time for TCL to introduce
disc golf to kids at El Rio Neighborhood
Center. He is asking for volunteers to help
demonstrate the sport and help run some putting
games and etc. If you would like to help out, please
call Ben at 400-7862 for more info. This will happen
on Wednesday April 30th at 4:30pm. He'll need at least
a couple of volunteers to help out and bring extra
putters!
Lemmon
Drop Update: Jack has asked that I inform
you all that camping at the Lemmon
Drop will be open beginning on Thursday May 15th
at 12:00pm. Also, Alan 'Upshot' Brown will be running
some mini disc golf up at the campground
that weekend. This will be official MDGF
rules and should be a really great course. We'll be
playing around the campsite up on the mountain. Contact
Alan for more info.
Finally,
apologies to Svea for not posting this cool item earleir.
TCL turned in a whopping $1500.00 cash and 62 lbs.food
donation to the Tucson Food Bank which was raised
at the last two Ice Bowls. Check out the nifty picture
of Svea with representatives from the Tucson Food
Bank and U of A Alumnus. Way to go, Tucson Disc Golfers!
And a special thanks to Svea for representing TCL
so well. Yeah girl, you do clean up pretty good ;)
And
here's a shot of the check. Notice that jewelry? Somebody
is gettin' hitched soon!
And
remember, TCL: now has just had a major shift in league
times/dates/locations. Be sure to check the League
Schedule for all the details!
Thursday
April 12th, 2008
A
revised league
schedule has been posted. Changes include the
new Marana Rock league, the Summer Groves 'B' league,
and new times/days for the Santa Cruz ladies league
and the Groves 'A' league. Be sure to pass the word
about these changes along to others!
Sunday,
April 6th, 2008
This
is just a brief update with only a couple of things
to cover.
Chris
has sent me a copy of the Caddy's
Booklet for the Extremely Hazardous
tourny which is next Saturday, April 12th! Be sure
to check the Tournament
Schedule for full details. This event is really
shaping up to be big fun, so i hope to see you all
there.
Also,
a quick reminder: This Wednesday is the next of the
TCL Open Forum Meetings. The meeting
begins at 7:00 and will be at Rusty's Resturaunt &
Sports Grill (2075 W Grant). All Current TCL members
who wish to help plan and brainstorm on ways TCL can
continue to grow disc golf and improve the club SHOULD
attend. The last meeting was quite productive and
provided the board with many great ideas. The meeting
will last no more than a couple of hours, 90% of this
time will be devoted to round-table discussions.
Finally,
every single person who uses Santa Cruz should take
time to say 'Thanks' to Ben, Andrew, Daniel and CoCo
who were the ONLY TCL members who
bothered to show up and help pour the new pads at
Santa Cruz. They really worked thier butts off to
pour the new/replacement pads. It's a shame that they
didn't have a few more hands to help... Again, please
show them a bit of gratitude; maybe even buy them
a beer or something. Or, better yet, turn out for
these park maintenance days and lend a hand. It's
an awful small contribution to make to help maintain
and improve the courses that we all play on!
Also,
now that we are into April, it is time to start making
your summer disc golf plans. Ben and Jack will be
needing volunteers to help with the Tumbleweed Open
and Lemmon Drop this year. If you are unable to play,
or would just like to be good samaritan, please consider
helping out with organizing and spotting. Both tournaments
are also in need of sponsors, so please help promote
them with your friends, places of business, or with
anyone else who you think might be interested in promoting
these events. Contact Ben or Jack with any leads you
can come up with!
Tuesday,
March 18th, 2008
This
Saturday, March 22nd, we will be playing the March
Monthly out at the new Marana
Rock course. The format will be Random Draw Doubles.
Sign up begins around 1:00, tee off at 1:30. Cost
is $7.00 per player. This will be the first organized
event out at the new course, so I think we'll see
a great turn-out!
Then,
next on the TCL calendar will be the Extremely
Hazardous event at Santa
Cruz. This will be two rounds of Industrial Strength
disc golf. See the events
calendar and flyer
for more details.
On
Saturday, April 5th there will be another park maintenance
day at Santa
Cruz. As most of you know, we were unable
to get the concrete last time as the concrete shop
was closed on Sundays. For this reason, we are cancelingSaturday
league and instead meeting up at Santa
Cruz at 8:00 am. Please turn out and bring picks
and shovels!
The
next Open Forum Club Meeting is Coming up on April
9th. Be sure to be there! The meeting is
open to all current TCL Members.
Monday,
March 10th, 2008
Lemmon
Drop Registration has begun! Be sure to send in
your entry
form asap and let Jack know if you will be camping
on the mountain! Course
maps have also been posted. This is easily one
of Southern AZ's wildest and most anticipated events
of the year. We will be playing on the extreme Lemmon
Drop course on Mt. Lemmon. Jack has reserved campground
space for a very reasonable rate. Players will be
taking the chairlift to the peak and then will play
down the slopes. This is an extremely beautiful area
and a very challenging event. This is a Cactus Series
and PDGA santioned tournament.
The
Marana Rock course
is now permanently installed! Mike Anderson and Jeff
Homburg have done a fantastic job of working with
the Marana officials to lay out an amazing new course!
This is a rugged course with rocks, cacti, trees,
and wildlife. Be sure to wear rugged shoes and long
pants. Rattlesnakes and other wildlife may be present,
so please be careful! For all the info, driving directions,
and course maps, check the Course
Directory.
Congrats
to all those who played in this year's Memorial. A
special shout out to Ams David Taylor (1st pl. Adv)
and Kelly Beitel (2nd pl. Adv Master), and to cashing
Pros Andrew Bohme (22nd pl. Open) and Kristin Cherry
(8th pl Open Women). You can view all the results
on the PDGA website: Pros
- Ams.
I have also posted some pictures
and these videos.
Tried
to kiss it off the right tree and into the basket.
Watch close and you can see it kiss the tree, bounce
off the rim, off the left tree, and onto the ground.
SOOOOOOO close!
You
really can't help but think 'God hates me' when a
beautiful putt like this gets spit out.
Saturday,
Feb 9th, 2008
Next
up on the TCL calendar is the Cupid's
Couples & Random Draw Doubles on Saturday
the 16th.This is TCL's new Am Rep Svea Anderson's
first time organizing and being the TD of her own
event. It should be a great time, so bring your spouse
out and play a round of mixed doubles, or come on
your own and play the random draw doubles! See the
TCL Calendar
for more details!
Then
on Sunday, Feb 17th we'll be doing
a course maintenance day at Santa Cruz. We'll
be pouring the 15/17 combo pad for the B course, raising
the practice basket, moving the bench from in front
of 10B, and lots more. We'll need everyone to turn
out and pitch in. We'll be doing a brief bit of golf
at normal league time, Then beginning around 9:30
we'll start organizing workers and such. TCL
will be providing lunch and drinks! If you
have any questions, contact
Ben.
Seems
like a ton of TCL members played in this year's Fountain
Hills Thrills (or is it 'Chills?"). Day one was
as fine a day of golf as I have ever seen at the Fountain,
but day two was a grueling round of slogging through
the rain. In spite of the cold, windy and wet conditions,
TCL really represented! We had someone place in just
about every division. Especially big news was Ben's
first time accepting cash making him an 'official'
pro. Check
out the results, then go congratulate someone
on the TCL
message board :)
Jack
and Trevor are already on the ball and finalizing
plans for Lemmon Drop and Vince's
Memorial! Also coming up soon is the EXtremely
Hazardous! Keep checking in on the Tournament
Schedule for details which I will be posting as
they come in!
This
years Tuscon
Ice Bowl made the local Fox News! Check out the
clip below! Tucson Chain Lightning raised $851.00
for the Tucson Community Foodbank! A special shout-out
to TCL's VP Chris Kaufmann for breaking Jack Adam's
record for most mulligans purchased at an Ice bowl.
Chris bought an astounding 45 mulligans! This was
a really great event this year and we had an astounding
turn out! Way to go, TCL! Thanx to Mike B. for posting
the clip to YouTube! We also
need all those who took pictures at the Ice Bowl
to please send
the pix so we can use them in the report and on
the website!
A
big 'CONGRATS!' to this year's TCL Club Champions:
Andrew Bohme (Open), Chris Kaufmann (Adv Am), Kristin
Cherry (Open Women), Mike Wessner (Int), and Svea
Anderson (Am Women).
I'll
have the Ice
Bowl results page up soon. Check back right here!
Fixed
the Ice Bowl 2007 Results page. Posted 2008 Club Championships
results. Posted flyer for Cupid's Couples Doubles

Happy
New Year!
Saturday
January 12th is this year's Ice
Bowl Charity event has been posted to
the Tournament
Schedule. We'll once again be playing the challenging
CDO Wash course (directions to the course are here).
As always, this is a charity event to support the
Tucson Food Bank. We'll have $1.00 mulligans available
for purchase. There will also be an raffle for a very
collectible Champion Destroyer with this years IceBowl
logo.
Sunday
January 13th is the Tucson
City Championships! This event is free
for all current club members. We'll have membership
forms available there and at the Ice Bowl. The TCL
board is springing for the food and beverages after
the event. We will be playing a first round of 18
holes at Groves beginning at 9:30. Then we'll meet
up after lunch for a second round of 18 at Santa Cruz.
For all the info and the flyer, check the Tournament
Schedule.
Reminder:
Membership
Renewals are due! Be sure to renew now so you
can be in for all the club benefits including full
shares of the Ace Pools!
One
of the hot topics discussed at the last board meeting
was attendance. For a long while, it was only the
club officers that ever made any of the public meetings.
After time, the board felt that, if only we were going
to attend them, then there was no point in having
to hold them at a restaurant as we used to do. Further,
planning meetings far in advance was, at best, difficult
as the board members all have different schedules.
However, the board has discussed this and decided
that there still needs to be some set public meetings
where the membership can have a chance to talk about
their concerns, ideas and issues with the board. To
this end, the club will now begin having a
quarterly open meeting with the times and
dates announced in advance. At the top of this page,
you will now see the times and dates for the four
2008 open meetings. I urge all club members to attend
these meetings. Even if you don't feel you have anything
new to bring to the table, your input on other members
items will be very helpful. It is only four days a
year, so please plan to attend them all!
Remember:
This friday is glow
league at Santa Cruz!

News:
Lots
of stuff to cover for this final website update of
2007, so I'll just get to it, shall I?
First
off, results for both the Turkey Shoot and GDS tour
have been posted in the Results
section. I also added links to the photo albums that
contain the snapshots. Thanks go out to Dave Shircore
for running the Turkey Shoot and to Kristin Cherry
for the GDS Tour. Both events were awesome! A special
thanks to Gateway
for sponsoring the GDS Tour. The event was a great
way to try out new discs (Hi-Flex plastic is a winner,
guys!) and to do a bit of club fundraising at the
same time.
TCL
membership forms (including renewal) for 2008
are now available. Be sure to get yours in soon! Renewals
are due by January 1st to remain current!
Next,
I have new information on the Tumbleweed scores reporting
problem. As has been said before, results were submitted
to the PDGA on the evening of the final day of this
years Tumbleweed. The PDGA Requested corrections and
some additional info, which was submitted via email
shortly after the end of the Tumbleweed. Evidently
the information was lost in transit and no second
request for the info was ever made, so it was assumed
that everything was copacetic until the last player
ratings update occured. After contacting the PDGA,
the information was resubmitted and delivery was confirmed.
The results, as listed on the PDGA site, are now 'Official'
and will be included in the next player ratings update.
Again, apologies to those who were disappointed that
the event was not included in the last update. We
will make sure that this problem doesn't happen again.
The
ladies league and glow league have new start times.
Check the League
Schedule for the most up to date info.
Those
of you who know Alan 'Upshot' Brown have probably
heard that he has decided to attempt playing every
course in America in one loooong tour!. If you don't
know Alan, or if the news of the Play
Em All Tour hasn't reached you, check out his
website.
I mention this not only in the interest of helping
Upshot gain interest in his crazy scheme, but also
because I designed the website ;)
Finally,
I just want to wish all my discin' friends everywhere
'HAPPY HOLIDAYS!'
Updates:
Built
pages for results from Turkey Shoot and GDS Tour.
Also added links to photos from some of the recent
Tucson events to the Results
page. Posted form for 2008 TCL memberships. Updated
the League Info. Uploaded some photos from the GDS
tour. Beat Daniel at the Turkey
Shoot. Three French Hens, Two Turtle Doves, and
all the other Birdies that I can find! Merry Christmas,
Tucson!

News:
Before
getting started, I would like to wish everyone a very
Happy Thanksgiving. I know I have tons to be thankful
for this year. If i may share, I am especially thankful
this year for my loving wife and beautiful daughter.
I am also thankful that I have so many good friends
to play disc golf with. Now on to the news...
In
case you've been living in a cave, the 2007
Turkey Shoot is this Saturday, Nov. 24th at Santa
Cruz!
The
nominations period for this year's TCL board elections
has officially ended without any nominations. The
current members of the TCL board thank all of you
for this strong vote of confidence in us. We will
continue to do our best to grow and improve the disc
golf scene in Tucson.
Many
of you have noticed that the Tumbleweed results were
not included in the November player ratings update
at the PDGA.
On behalf of Ben, Myself, and the Tumbleweed staff,
we apologize for the mix-up that caused this delay.
The story, as i understand it, is this: The results
were uploaded to the PDGA
website the day of the event. The PDGA
contacted us to ask for some additional information,
which we provided within a week of the tournaments
ending. However, some miscommunication occurred and
the corrections was somehow lost. Having never received
any other requests for info, we assumed that everything
was fine and finalized. Unfortunately, this was not
the case and the results remained 'unofficial'. Ben
has been in close contact with the PDGA since then
and all the info has been resubmitted and should be
included in the next update. We will continue to stay
in contact with the PDGA
until the next player ratings update to make sure
everything is good-to-go.
Over
the last few days, I have been hard at work on the
site, the result if which is that TCL now has a RSS
Feed. RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a way
that users can stay up-to-date on major announcements
and updates to the TCL website by simply checking
a bookmark within their browser. Both Internet Explorer
and Firefox's current browser versions support RSS.
There are also many free RSS Reader tools out there
which you can run on your desktop. To subscribe to
the RSS feed, simply click on the RSS
Feed link on the left side of this page. This
will, if your browser supports it, create a link to
the feed. For more info on RSS, check the Internet
Explorer or Firefox websites, or run a Google search.
Updates:
Added
some new Thanksgiving and winter holiday emticons
to the forum.
Set up an RSS Feed for the
main TCL website. removed link to the 2007 elections
info section. Updated the info on the TCL
Officers page. Added the 2008 Tucson tournaments
to the Tournament
Schedule. Decorated the main page for Turkey Day.
worked on the formatting of the links
and membership
info pages.

Turkey Shoot
is set and info has been posted! We'll be playing
3 rounds of par 2 golf at Santa Cruz on November 24th.

spectacular job with this event and it is a favorite
with Arizona disc golfers. Be sure to be there!
The
nominations period for the 2007
TCL board elections is quickly coming to an end.
If you want to nominate for President, Secretary,
or Am Rep, you must turn in the form
by November 1st!
A
special mention: Congrats to Kristin Cherry for her

The
2007 Ace Race was a great time! Discraft had us playing
with a temperamental new understable mid-range. We
played two rounds in the Ace Race Format out at Groves
that Saturday. We had 3 aces, two of which were during
the Ace Race. But in the end, it was that strange
character known as Zoomer Chino (AKA Steve Zumbruski)
who walked away with the winnings! But, as I mentioned,
there was three aces hit that Saturday. The third,
or more accurately, the first ace of the day was hit
by Ben Vosper during league. His ace was good for
a whopping $216.00! Ask him to loan you some money!
:) As a side-note to all you intermediatte level players,
when you are gifted with a chance to get out and compete
on an even footing with the pros, pony up and play!
It felt good to win something!
The
TCL Board would like to say a heart-felt thanks to
former Vice President Jack Adams. Jack has been one
of Tucson's most tireless and eager contributors to
TCL and everything Disc Golf. Jack is personally responsible
for many contributions, But perhaps most notably it
was Jack who arranged and added the Lemmon Drop to
Tucson's tournament schedule. But Jack has also contributed
much more, working behind the scenes at nearly every
tournament and event put on in Tucson over the last
several years.Thankfully, Jack has assured us that
he will continue to take part in Disc Golf in Tucson
and will continue to run the annual Lemmon Drop. Jack
has recently moved to the Phoenix-metro area, and
I hope the AZDGC will be able to appreciate him as
much, if not more, than we in Tucson do!
Due
to Jack's stepping down, the board held an emergency
vote to decide his replacement. Therefore, TCL would
like to welcome Chris Kaufmann to the position of
VP. Chris has been serving as the Club's Am Rep, therefore,
Svea Anderson has generously offered to fill the Am
Rep post vacated by Chris. A big 'thanks' to both
Chris and Svea for being willing to step up when the
club needed them.
On
an odd sort of news, you may or may not have noticed
that I have been off the course for nearly three weeks
now. I had taken sick the Sunday after the Ace Race
and, after two weeks of severe symptoms,
I finally went to the ER and had some tests run. The
good news is that I should be, after a bit of time
and rest, just fine. But what, you might ask, could
kick the crap out of a stout fellow such as Steve
Chino? Well, believe it or not, I have been diagnosed
as having West Nile virus! Wierd, no? This disease
is a viral infection that, in about 80% of cases has
no sickness or symptoms associated with it. Unfortunately,
I was in the bad 20% of cases and have been severely
sick due to it. Anyways, I don't mention this in hopes
of sympathy, but to warn you all that West Nile is
very real and can be quite nasty. West Nile is communicated
by mosquitoes who have first bitten an infected bird,
and then pass the disease on to a human. So please
folks, if you are out playing near mosquitoes, use
DEET regularly and reapply as often as necessary.
And be especially careful with the kids and old folks.

Let
me begin with a quick apology: I have left the site
idle and un-updated for almost a month. In my defense,
Tumbleweed & other club-related duties plus school
and home, etc have kept me otherwise occupied. But
I’ll try to get the updates posted a little
more frequently.
News:
On
October 6th, Tucson will be having a Discraft
1-Disc Ace Race! The event will be held at Groves
park following regular league (tee-off at 10:00
am). The cost will be $20.00 which gets you 2 unreleased
Discraft prototypes plus other sweet goodies from
Discraft. In the Ace Race format, only aces and hitting
metal are counted, with the most aces winning the
event. We'll be playing a shortened version of the
Groves course that should be pretty darned ace-friendly.
Only 30 spots are available, and it will be first-come
first-served, so my advice is to show up early (no
pre-registration, sorry.) Contact
Ben or myself if you need any further info. This
event will also be a club fund-raiser, so be sure
to turn out and support TCL.
On
Friday of this week, and on the first Friday of each
month thereafter, Kristin Cherry will be running a
Monthly
Glow League at Santa Cruz River Park. There
is a $5.00 buy-in for this league. Kristin will have
mini glow sticks available for you to purchase 2-for-$1.
If you have flashlights, be sure to bring them. This
should be a really fun new addition to the
regular leagues here in Tucson. Please help spread
the word!
While
on the topic of leagues, Tuesday
league at Kino
is on hold for the present. We are working with the
Kino management to try to get the things ok'ed for
league under the lights, but until we have all the
details sorted, Tuesday league will be cancelled.
Check back here for updates. Thanks to Trevor for
his work on establishing contact with the folks at
Kino.
In
November, we will be having the Annual Turkey
Shoot at Santa
Cruz River Park on November 24th. As any Arizona
disc golfer can testify to, this event is a BLAST.
Dave Shircore is the TD and he always puts on a super-fun
event! I'll be posting updates and info as I receive
them, so be sure to check back here! The format is
2 rounds of par 2 golf.
Another
exciting new addition to the tournament schedule is
slated for December 9th: The
Gateway GDS Tour! This event will be held
at Santa Cruz
River Park. We will have 50 spots available with
no pre-registration. There will be 4 Am divisions:
Advanced, Intermediate, Women, and Recreational. Players
will receive 2 free Gateway discs, a mini, a sticker
and more in their players package. The cost will be
$25.00 for TCL
members and $30.00 for non-members; Women and
Juniors play for free!. We will officially begin accepting
2008 TCL memberships and renewals at this event, so
if you are a non-member, you'll be getting an extra
month of membership by registering on that day. We
will have special accommodations for Pro players (Gateway
only sponsors this as an Am event), so everyone is
welcome to turn out! If anyone would like to contribute
items for side-game prizes, supply some food for hungry
golfers, or sponsorship for an ace fund, then please
contact Kristin Cherry. Signups will begin at 8:00am,
tee-off at 9:30am. I'll post more info as it becomes
available.
One
final bit of news: TCL has voted to contribute $100.00
in merchandise to the Phoenix
Lady’s Open tournament which will be held
on November 4th at Vista in Scottsdale. Ben and myself
will also be accepting cash donations to be contributed
to the payouts at this event, so if you have an extra
dollar or two, or twenty, please donate it to help
support women's disc golf in Arizona!

News
The
biggest news this time is the complete site refurbishing.
You will notice as you browse around that many improvements,
both cosmetic and functional, have been made accross
the TCL site. The goal of all this was to remove the
frames which have been causing annoying scroll bars
to appear on the pages. This improvement will also
make the site easier for search engines to crawl and
catalogue the site's contents, thereby increasing
our visibility to searches performed via search engines
such as Google, Yahoo!, etc.
