Re: Your Longest Driver - 2004/06/29 13:46 I'm not sure what is average for newer players, but I have about a years worth of playing under my belt and can only throw ~300ft. I throw a 150g Polaris LS, nice straight disc and easy to throw. I might try a heavier Polaris soon as I am begining to turn the 150g disc over sometimes now. What do you think the average D for players that have been playing for about a year? While It would be nice to have more D on most courses in the minneapolis area I can par every hole, and even have chances @ birdie on a some. I would like to be able to bomb a 400ft drive, I would have a chance for birdie on most every hole ( distance wise anyway). Maybe another year or 2 and I'll be there.

Re: Your Longest Driver - 2004/12/12 21:14 Yeah I wouldn't be concerned too much with distance !! It will come with experience.

Also I have found it really hard to believe many of these people who say they throw 450-500ft. back hand in the air. Now I am NOT questioning anyone in this Forum. Its just thru my own experience
when talking with people in my local Disc Club. When I first joined my local club , some of the guys talked smack saying they could consisitently throw 450 ft. etc..etc..in the air. Then when we got out on the course they were lucky to hit 325ft. on a good throw.

So I have come to the conclusion that many of these people who have been playing for 3 months and already throw 450 ft. are mainly "hypsters". Its just pretty rare. And it seems to be the old "delusions of grandeur" syndrome that many of these people suffer from who say they throw 450 ft. I actually think they really believe they are throwing these distances. Of course they really are not !!!

And actually about 2 out of 10 players who play Disc Golf are able to break 300ft in the air consistently.

Believe me to throw 450ft on the fly, you have to be a big big time thrower and that only comes thru years and years of playing. PERIOD !!!

Anyway, just don't get to caught up in all the distance lingo and concentrate on control and repeated muscle memory when going thru the motions of disc throwing !!.

Re: Your Longest Driver - 2004/12/18 12:17 beast, teebird and firebird are all up there, but for the max distance I go to the Beast all the time because of its speed and glide.
Might be able to find another to go a bit further, but I'd prefer to improve my technique to gain the additional distance I want - over 150m/500ft on a regular basis. Not far off, as I'm 400/450-500 regularly. All on the flat with no wind.

Now the last poster, by his post, may have difficulty believing me, but he is right that it takes alot of time, but my experience is a little different to what he described.

I have only been throwing dg drivers seriously for 6 months, although I have had a few odd ones for ~ 2 years they weren't the correct weight etc. The majority of my experience comes from 11 years of playing Ultimate and solely throwing UltraStars. This is where I developed what would seem to be good throwing technique, that I have since been able to translate to DG distance through lots of practice.

Its beginning to pay off, and although distance isn't everything, the technique required for distances over 120m/400ft, will assist with throws at all other distances.

Technique is the key, but while being one of the most difficult things to learn correct and work on, it is also one of the most rewarding.
Seeing the disc sail through the air is just awesome.
Well worth the effort.

Re: Your Longest Driver - 2004/12/20 02:43 Oh yeah !! I believe you !! I have played with experienced Ultimate players who can hum a golf disc a mile. And your exactly right there is nothing quite like seeing a friisbee be able to go that far.

And especially throwing in front of the common citizen who has never seen a golf disc. To see the expression on their face as they stare in disbelief having never seen a human being throw a frisbee that far!! And never believing it was possibly up until that time !!
Its quite a treat !!

That in itself is almost rewrding enough to work at learning to throw a Disc
350 ft. or better. Let alone the reward for lowering your golf score when you can accurately throw these distances !!
