help - need purchasing advice - 2006/06/06 15:29 hi there,
total newbie here.....actually i joined because my husband likes to play and his birthday's coming up. He's taken me a couple of times and it's been a lot of fun, but he doesn't have a good "set" of discs. actually, i'm not sure you can call what he has a "set" at all. ANYWAY.....was just wondering what you all would recommend as a good (or in your opinion the best) starter set of discs. what do you consider to be the "must have" list? i tried to go online to see what's available, but i couldn't tell.
any help would be greatly appreciated!!! thx.

Re:help - need purchasing advice - 2006/06/07 15:11 With the number of disc manufacturers and discs available now it's very difficult for a new player to choose sometimes.

If he is a pure beginner (only thrown a golf disc once or twice and has no ultimate experience) a good start would be three discs. A putter, a midrange and a driver(Often for absolute beginners I would recommend against the driver at first even). There are two main disc manufactures, Innova and Discraft. I'm going to give you suggestions for both, you can't really go wrong with either one.

For the putter an 175 gram Aviar from Innova or a 175 gram Magnet from Discraft. These are the basic putters used by most golfers.

For a midrange a 175 gram Shark from Innova or a 175 gram Hawk from Discraft.

For a driver a 170 leapard from Innova and a 170 XL from Discraft.

All of these discs come in different plastics. To start off with the low grade plastics, DX and Pro from Innova, D and Elite X from Discraft are the best choices. They are lower in cost and easier to replace in case of being lost or outgrowing them.

If you husband is a bit older than you might want to get slightly lighter discs, 160+ grams instead of 170+ grams. They are easier to throw and won't tire out his arm as quickly.

I hope that helps and if he's interested in more information about throwing technique then a visit to Blake's Disc Golf Review might be good. www.discgolfproshop.com is a sponsor of this website and as good as any for buying discs online.

Good luck!

Re:help - need purchasing advice - 2006/06/07 20:16 thanks stan-
he's not really a 'beginner', but I most certainly am
actually, he's pretty good - can definitely hold his own, I just don't know that he's ever taken the time to set himself up so I thought it would be perfect timing as we come into longer days, nicer weather, and his b-day coming up
it's something we can do together too (that is if his patience holds out teaching me to have technique....lol)
wish HIM luck!

Re:help - need purchasing advice - 2006/06/07 21:30 That's great! I've tried to get my wife to play more often with me, but she is too competitive. I've been playing for several years now and she has a hard time letting go and having fun instead of trying to compete. Someday, maybe.

Then you should be thinking about getting yourself some discs. The beginning discs I mentioned would be good for you, but you should try and find them in lighter weights. 150 gram plastic is much easier to learn with.

Just remember to play to your own par. It's you against the course, with your husband. Not you against your husband at the course *grin*.

If he has been playing a bit then he would probably be more interested in some of the newer, more advanced discs. The Aviar putter is still the putter of choice for many pros, but he should learn to throw a Roc (from Innova) or a Buzz (from discraft) for a midrange and a TeeBird (from Innova) or Crush (from Discraft) for a driver. These are longer more stable discs.

Have fun!

Re:help - need purchasing advice - 2006/06/16 03:47 These were great suggestions. One thing to keep in mind is that most guys are very particular about thier plastic(discs). a disc that one guy thinks is great another guy might burn his disc bag if it came in contact with it. I would try to look at the stamps on the discs he is currently using. Then you could buy him new versions of those same discs in newer, more advanced plastics ( ie. star p[lastic from innova or esp from discraft) Another good idea that would make him very happy would be to buy him a new disc bag. These come in many varieties from small cheap 3 disc bags to backpack style pro bags that hold 20 or more discs and even a six pack if you like. If you buy him a new bag and one new driver I promise he would be totally stoked. For a disc maybe buy him a star tee-rex. This is the newest offering from innova discs and would definately impress his buddies when he pulled it out of his new bag! hope this helps

Re:help - need purchasing advice - 2006/06/16 08:49 Hey Jesse-
Thanks for the advice. I ordered the hubby two different putters, mid-range, and distance each......and a bag........so hopefully he'll find something he likes and I'll learn more as we go. As a complete novice, I'll just start off with the olds ones/ones he doesn't like, this way we can still play together. His b-day was wednesday, but of course the pkg didn't arrive in time (which ended up okay....it rained anyway). I'm going to suprise him this afternoon and pick him up from work early for a game.........guess I'll find out how I did..........lol.
