A beginner that needs some advice - 2004/05/07 17:34 I just started frolf and am doing ....alright. My biggest problem is not being able to throw long and low, because most of my shots end up high in the air and then curve. Some advice on how to throw a straight, low shot would be great. If it makes any difference i am a lefty.

Re: A beginner that needs some advice - 2004/05/14 07:24 I had the same problem myself... my problems were grip and release. I was only using 3 fingers and really trying to rip the hell out of it. I trained myself to grip with all 4, and start my throw from shoulder to shoulder, keeping it nice and even. Don't try to throw real far right now; work more on getting it even. The distance will come in a while. It's much easier to throw your second shot from the fairway then the trees to the left or right.

what really helped my game was throwing a roc back n forth with a buddy for a while.

Re: A beginner that needs some advice - 2004/05/14 07:41 I've been fighting that too. You have to release the disc with the nose very close to pointing parallel with the flat ground. If the nose points up too much you'll stall out just like you're describing.

The two biggest things that have helped me are: moving my thumb closer to the edge of the disc (i.e. not pointing radially at the center) and bringing my swing up to nipple level instead of from my hip to my shoulder.

This article helped out a lot too:

Re: A beginner that needs some advice - 2004/05/14 20:44 hi new player
my name is phil loyd and ive been playing for 23 years.

i see your problem alot
two different possible things happen
a low to high release
or a nose up release
watching longer throwers may prove out to be a low to high release notice most 400plus throwers use a full
or mostly full shoulder turn which levels out the angle
they throw at in the beginning you will loose a little control
but try throwing a little more heiser[or right to left if your a righty] 10 feet high 100 miles an hour project a spot in front of you about 80 feet that the disc is level and screamin theese other guys have good solid advice too

Re: A beginner that needs some advi - 2004/05/16 18:49 ok...i'm left handed as well. The biggest thing to get a long, straight shot is to make sure that you keep your release level, or even slightly down. From shoulder to shoulder, just keep it level.

Once you have that down, the only other thing I can think of to getting max, staright shots is in your wrist snap. But that comes with time. Start just by keeping the whole process level.
