After three days of battling on the Toboggan Championship course in Michigan, the United States Amateur Disc Golf Championship presented by Discraft has come to an end. Even with the drastic makeover that the course took in the months leading up to the event, the scores remained much the same as they were in the years prior. In the end, it was consistent smart golf that took home the gold.
Colten Montgomery #35876 is a 20 year old disc golfer from Longmont, CO. He’s not new to high stakes golf by any means. He finished second place in the 19 & Under division at the 2013 PDGA Amateur World Championships in Emporia, KS after shooting the hot round during the semi-finals, unofficially rated at 1037, and the hot round again for the finals. He’s also played in the Open division several times, and played well enough to cash.
Colten started the final day on the lead card and demonstrated from the get-go that he deserved to be there. He was joined by Tony Maccarino #32685, George Beno #49225, and 16 year old local forehand fanatic Andrew Kaluk #35027. Colten started the day at the bottom of the lead card, down by three strokes to Maccarino. That lead wouldn’t last very long. Prior to 2003, Team DGA was made up of Course Reps. and Course Designers around the country focused on integrating disc golf into the local school systems and introducing the sport to Park and Rec. departments. Today, DGA has added focus to not just building courses but to playing and competing on those courses too.
In 2003 after the death of ”Steady” Ed Headrick the father of disc golf and DGA’s founder, Team DGA was established with the goal of continuing the values that Ed found the most important in a person and in disc golf, Fun, Spirit and Community. Team DGA members are not only representatives of DGA, but are ambassadors to the sport Ed and DGA started. DGA team members are role models for the youth, help the sport grow and believe in the future of disc golf.
DGA has the honor of sponsoring a small tight-knit team of incredibly diverse players who love the sport of disc golf and who are proud ambassadors. Team DGA ranges from our Disc Golf Ambassador and Arm Farm Teams to our ProLine and Champion Team, home to Jon Baldwin the 2011 Pro Masters Disc Golf World Champion.
While they compete as individuals both locally and nationally our team has a family feel that we work hard to maintain as we grow and expand the team. Unlike many other sponsored teams, Team DGA, regularly practices, competes and travels together. Many of our team members are based out of our home community of Santa Cruz, CA. Many of them call the world famous DeLaveaga Disc Golf Course their home course.
While our team is based out of California you don‘t need to live on the West Coast to be a DGA Team member. We are always interested in talking to potential team members so if you feel like you possess the qualities above and you want to be a part of a true disc golf team please feel free to contact us.
